John L. Thornton

John L. Thornton is a Professor and Director of the Global Leadership Program at the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management in Beijing.  He is also Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Brookings Institution.  Mr. Thornton is Co-Chairman of Barrick Gold Corporation. He retired in 2003 as President and a member of the board of the Goldman Sachs Group.

 

Mr. Thornton is a director of the Ford Motor Company and China Unicom.  Mr. Thornton is a trustee, advisory board member or member of the China Foreign Affairs University, China Institute, China Investment Corporation (CIC), China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), Council on Foreign Relations, General Atlantic, The Hotchkiss School, McKinsey Advisory Council, Morehouse College, the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and Schwarzman Scholars.  He is Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management. 

 

In 2007, Institutional Investor Magazine named Mr. Thornton one of 40 individuals who have had the greatest influence in shaping global financial markets over the past forty years.  In 2008, he was awarded the Friendship Award of the People's Republic of China, the highest honor accorded to a non-Chinese citizen.  The Chinese government also named him as one of fifteen ‘foreign experts’ who have made the most significant contribution to China’s development over the past three decades.  Mr. Thornton received the 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Achievement Award, which honors past participants in collegiate tennis who have made unique contributions to society as well as achieving excellence in their careers.

 

Mr. Thornton received an A.B. in history from Harvard College, a B.A./M.A. in jurisprudence from Oxford University and an M.P.P.M. from the Yale School of Management.  He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Bank Street College of Education in 2003.  Mr. Thornton was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007 and an Honorary Fellow of St. John’s College, Oxford University in 2009.
